Bright and early wake-up again this morning, but not because of the kids this time. Here's how today went down...
We thankfully get to stay in the parking lot of the scout office (thanks Travis!!). The downside to this is that it's right on the corner of two main roads that run through town, so everyone punches the gas out of the stoplight. We heard cars and motorcycles stretching their legs until around 11:30. And to boot, people started lighting off fireworks around 10:30. Put all this together, and neither Carrie or I got a great sleep, and the kids woke up early to the sound of cars on the way to work.
We wanted to spend as much time with the Emery's as possible, so we got together with them around 9:30 to go to the Pueblo Zoo. It was only about 1/4 mile from our trailer, so it was a quick jump across the main drag to get there. Travis and Lindsay have a membership that gets seven people in, so it only ended up costing us $12 for all of us to go. The kids had a great time seeing the lions, zebras, baby otters, and gibbon monkeys. We walked the whole zoo and it was time for lunch, so we went back to their house.
One of Travis's responsibilities for his job is to oversee the scout camp in his council, San Isabel Scout Ranch. Part of the camp is a whitewater rafting trip out of the Rocky Mountain High Adventure Base. He helps out with a lot of the recruiting and hiring for all these positions. Because of his background with working at so many scout camps, he knows a lot of former staff and has had success in recruiting them to come work at his camps. This was true for this year as well. Tommy Gall worked for Travis and me at Camp New Fork in Wyoming. He worked as a guide on our whitewater canoe trek, so it made sense that he would get a phone call to come work at RMHAB. Unfortunately for him, the camp was shut down by the state of Colorado due to COVID, so he is out of a job for the rest of the summer. Today was his clean up day, and after he finished his final duties at camp, he stopped by to say hi to us and Travis before heading home. It has been since 2016 since we've seen him, and it was great to see him again. For those that have never worked at a camp, the staff always ends up becoming a family by the end of the summer. Anytime we get to see our former staff is always a good time.
After lunch, we put the kids down for a nap and got some laundry done. The downside of a long vacation is you either have to pack enough clothes for the whole trip, or find somewhere to wash it all. Travis and Lindsay were kind enough to let us use their washer and dryer to get ready for the second half of our trip. What nice friends they are...
Outside of all that, we really just hung out with them for the night. We came on this trip to spend time with friends we hadn't seen in a year, and that's exactly what we did. We got Pizza Hut pizza and wings (by the way, boneless wings are just chicken nuggets for adults...get bone-in or nothing) and sat around until 8:30. We figured we should get the kids to bed, so we went back to the trailer and called it a night. Tomorrow they are taking us to the mountains to see some sights. Until then, thanks for reading!!
