Oh what a beautiful morning!! Oh what a beautiful day!! This was such an awesome day and I can't wait to get into it, so here goes!!
As I said yesterday, today is our trip to the Grand Canyon. Colby has been asking to go since we brought it up last week, yet this morning he was totally against it. Funny how kids are. We made the 59 mile drive to the national park. I'm assuming it's due to the current COVID schtuff going on, but we didn't have to pay at the gate. They handed us a map with a QR code on the back and were told to scan it and pay online 'today, tomorrow, or whenever we could do it', then were let through the gate. Interesting way of doing things. We had to drive another 4-5 miles through the park to actually get to the canyon edge, but boy was the wait worth it. I always knew it was grand, but this was absolutely spectacular. You look around for a while, think you've found the bottom, then notice another crevice that goes down even farther. It took a good 5-10 minutes of staring to actually find the Colorado River, and even then, it was hard to see because it was so far away. Right as we stepped on to the south rim path, we saw a helicopter flying lower than we were standing. It was an interesting perspective considering I've only ever seen the bottom of them from below. We took way too many pictures (is that even possible at somewhere as beautiful as this...?), so I'll let the pictures do the talking for the rest of this part of the day.
We only stayed until lunch, because let's be real, there isn't a lot to hold a 7-year-old, 4-year-old, and a 2-year-old's attention past the first hour of looking at a giant hole in the ground. On the way back, we stopped into Williams to get gas. It is totally a realistic version of Radiator Springs from the movie Cars. Holy cow it was awesome!!! They had a main drag where all the stores were Route 66 themed and had neon all over. We found some rail cars the kids loved and a giant Route 66 sign to take pictures in front of. It was a really cool place to stop and see. We looped through town twice just to take it all in.
Tomorrow, we get back on the road and start the push for home. We briefly considered detouring through Las Vegas so we could stop at the Hoover Dam, but changed our minds when we looked at the forecast and saw a high of 107 degrees tomorrow. Instead, our plan is to camp in the forest outside of Cedar City. I looked up the drive to see what to expect, and it has 14,000 feet of cumulative climbing from here to there, so it sounds like another long day of driving. We should be home by Saturday though, so that's a good thing. Until tomorrow, thanks for reading!!!!
