McCashland Family Vacation, Day 2 - Brigham City, UT to Rawlins, WY

Another day, another stretch of road.  Before this trip, Carrie made blackout curtains for almost all the windows in the trailer (didn't want to put one behind the kitchen sink), and she even made one for the vent above our bed.  It pleasantly stayed dark inside until we decided to open them around 7:30.  We were awakened around 6:30 by Emmy singing the theme song to Mira: Royal Detective and we all put off getting up for another hour.   There's nothing to do in Utah on a Sunday morning, so we ate breakfast, got dressed, and hooked up the trailer to leave around 9:00.  Today's drive took us across the Utah-Wyoming border, through a VERY windy highway corridor, and into Rawlins, WY, to the Rawlins KOA (pictured above) for the night.

Wyoming isn't known for much, but it should be known for it's scenic drive from Utah.  It was GORGEOUS!!  It reminded me a lot of driving through southern Utah, except the rock formations weren't the same bright shade of red.  But oh my word was it windy.  It was gusting up to 40mph, with steady wind around 30mph.  Depending on which way the road was going, it was either pushing us (allowing for great gas mileage), or hitting us broadside and making me swerve all over the place.  I had more than one moment of white knuckles on the steering wheel.  I don't think it would have been as bad if I wasn't pulling a 24' trailer, but still.  It was a lot of wind.

Saw this cool ice cream semi at the Little America truck stop

We are staying tonight at the Rawlins KOA.  KOA's are a great place to stop, mainly because you know what you're going to get, for the most part.  This one is located right next to the freeway, so it seems like we will be hearing semi trucks passing by all night.  There isn't as much (any) shade as the Brigham City KOA we stayed at last night either.  They do have a playground  and splashpad (closed today, Sunday) for the kids, basketball court, horseshoes, and a couple small one-room cabins for rent.  Our space wasn't as level as I've known KOA's to be in the past.  I'm OK with front to back leveling because it's as simple as raising/lowering the tongue jack.  The spot we were assigned, and many that I see looking around, aren't level side to side, meaning we had to put boards under the wheels on one side, drive up on them, check for level, drive back off, add more boards, drive back up on them, check for level, and accept that's as close as it's going to get.  It seems like a small thing, but trying to sleep on an un-level surface is tough to do.  However, having said all that, it was pretty cheap to stay here (only $35 for a back-in, water/power site per night).  I suppose we'll survive.  We made some delicious burgers for dinner on my mini grill I got from my mother-in-law for my birthday.  I've only cooked on a Traeger grill for so long, I forgot what beef cooked over charcoal tastes like.

After dinner, we took a drive through old town Rawlins.  There wasn't a lot to look at until we made it to Tully Park.  There was a full-sized, old-style locomotive in the park that has a ramp where visitors can walk into part of it.  The kids thought it was the coolest thing ever.  The playground was part old-school, part safety-conscious, and the kids had a great time on both parts.  Parker got a big sliver in his finger from the wood side of it, but he put on his best brave face when I pulled out my pocket knife to get it out.  It was a good time all around.

Tomorrow we pack up and make our way to the Denver area.  We plan on staying there for three days and exploring the area to our hearts content.  Until then, thanks for reading!!!
